Two if By Sea

Updated: Jul 20

Hi, everyone!

It’s good to be back in the Med, and it’s good to be back with the blog.

Last summer onboard Oosterdam, I was happily pursuing presentation themes such as the Venetian Empire, Ancient Olympics, Corfu celebrities, Croatian cuisine, etc.  While working on these, I clarified what I currently find interesting:

  • Making connections between/among different ports (thank you liberal arts degree);

  • Bringing meaning to the piles of rocks you see at ancient archeological sites - what was the experience of living here?; and

  • Exploring the “B” list ports, so to speak. While many have experienced Dubrovnik, how many have visited Kotor, Montenegro? (which, for my money, is stunning and way less crowded)

I still find Corfu and Croatia beautiful places. Greece is still chaotic and playful.  Italy still feels like home to me. This summer I have now also become slightly obsessed with Malta and exploring some of “B” list attractions in those “A” list ports.

When cruising the Med, the temptation to squeeze in as many historical sights as you can in your 7-.10-,14-day or more cruise can be strong.  Chances are, however, you will have minimal sea days to rest and catch your breath. The heat and humidity are real, intensified by the marble and limestone architecture reflecting the heat. I have always recommended alternating long days or tours with days to take it a bit easier.  To that prescription I now add: spend some time on/in the water.

This week I had the pleasure of TWO catamaran sails & swims in two countries, Montenegro and Greece.  I still got a little of my research happiness in, but all within the context of beautiful scenery, relaxation, and glorious swims in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Med.

Heading to the beach in the Med? For most countries in the Med, the beaches should be free if you want to plop down a towel and enjoy.  If you select a beach that is within a hotel or restaurant’s access to the water, you might be given a bit of a hassle - check that country’s laws before you go to see if you are within your rights to stake your place. If you want to use a beach chair and umbrella, you will pay a fee.  I’ve seen prices range from €10-25.

Regardless if you are headed to the beach or out on a catamaran, some things to think about taking with you:

  • Sunscreen, water, towel, hat, sunglasses. I hope these are the obvious ones.

  • Water shoes - many beaches in the Med are rocky or pebbly. Be kind to your feet - you’ll want them in good shape for when you are walking all those ruins again.

  • Plastic bag - while reducing the use of plastic is good, chances are you still have a carrier bag or two lying about. Super handy for putting wet towels, swimsuits, etc. back in your bag.

  • Waterproof phone pouch/case - if there isn’t a safe place for your belongings or someone to watch your stuff when you are in the water, you might want to take your phone/valuables with you.

  • Minimal cash & cards - which can also be placed in that phone pouch/case.

  • Battery pack & cable for your phone - with the high temperatures, phones lose battery power that much quicker.

Wellness Round Up

Unfortunately, I have been slacking a bit on my nutrition and hydration. And stress has had its moments.

Sleep and movement are still great.  In addition to all the walking in the Med, I have FINALLY been doing the strength training that I was slacking on for the past however many months.  Super handy when your 19- year old stepson is happy to patiently show you how to use the machines properly in the gym and then push you and encourage you. I still have my entertainment PTSD of using the ship’s gym, but slowly I am working on letting this go.
