Devil with a Blue Dress

This week we concluded the final Antarctica call of the season. Proud to say it has been my ninth visit to Antarctica.

While the ride down and up can be pretty bumpy (yes, we had 25-feet swells, 80-mph winds and some pretty serious listing), each trip is unique and amazing. There are certain places that we try to get to each time - some spots known for their penguin rookeries, some for whales, some for history, some for stunning views. I was a little worried at the start of this one as we had some not-so-great weather, and I thought - oh, dear, I’ve never had a bad visit to Antarctica, but this cruise might prove the exception. We still saw amazing sights and different experiences than the previous visits this season: orcas and humpbacks together, Port Lockroy (UK station), the Weddell Sea. We even had an exchange with the Seabourn Quest, a ship from our sister company. They gave us some batteries to bring to Palmer Station (US station). Just before we said goodbye to Antarctica, we stopped at Palmer Station, delivering the batteries as well as some food as the snow gently fell. They hadn’t been resupplied since about Christmas time, so a feast for them that night.

On our last day in Antarctica I finally got out the Blue Dress - a formal gown that has been around the world with me.

Ten years ago in Antarctica we had snow that stuck, and, as it was formal night, we HAD to get a photo in our gowns in the snow in Antarctica (as you do). After that contract, I was headed to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos, and mom suggested I get a photo in the dress at those locations as well.  And so the traveling Blue Dress was born.

We now head back towards South America. Dirk and I have nine days before we step off in San Antonio, Chile. Antarctic magic aside, we feel ready to head home and on to our next adventures.

Wellness Round Up

And so sadly, I think this is the first week since I have started this blog, that I need to say, I have not been successful in my quest for quality nutrition, hydration, movement, sleep and stress. Of these, I have probably done the best with hydration and my squats (Tiny Habits going strong!).  I have also scheduled all my doctor and dentist maintenance appointments, so I will count that on the wellness-win side.

That's it for now. For those who are fans, enjoy Super Bowl Sunday.

See you next week from Chile. Bon Voyage & Bon Appétit!
